THE BEST ICE CREAM IN VIENNA (Bermuda Triangle be damned)

I live in the Bermuda Triangle of Eissalons (Ice cream parlors): Zanoni & Zanoni, Eissalon Tuchlauben and Gelateria Hohemarkt, each separated by their fans and foes and a mere 2 minute walk. Though my favorite flavor resides a whole 4 minute walk away at Schwedenplatz....if I ever disappear check the triangle.

April is the cruelest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.

T.S. Elliot The Waste Land

T.S. Elliot

It would be convenient if tough days were confined soley to an already difficult month. I am would be willing to sacrifice February for this very purpose - to reserve for malaise and malady. But what actually happens is you get a disaster here, a loss there and the next thing you know the whole damn year is flecked with existential crisis and bleak anniversaries. Even April gets blemished, but of course, T.S. Elliot already told us that in the first lines of his modernist masterpiece, The Waste Land.

I had been thinking about the poet is relation to other people suffering as I left the house to view the galleries. Luckily at the end of the day I left these galleries still believing that making art matters. (Litmus test #1: check.) I also thought that maybe all art can be extracted from a few lines in T.S. Elliot.

So of course, the first show I walk into is….

(DARLING) You Send Me

You Send Me will be an exhibition of small works that takes its title and inspiration from the Sam Cooke song of the same name.  The exhibition opens Friday the 13th of May from
7-10pm at Bauernmarkt 9/2/6.

More details to follow.

What a minefield I got into when I naively started some searches on the web for “soap on a rope”, “meat on rope“ and “meat on a thread”. Who knew? I, of course, had been in search of a literal commonsense explanation for the utterly unexplainable.

A city’s street level detritus should be considered omens of the highest rank. These abandoned or lost trinkets, playing cards and small change can serve as valuable talismans (often in lieu of actual advice or time consuming therapy). What is left on the streets (if anything) tells a great deal about a city too. The ability to garner meaning from this flotsam and jetsam is just one of the urban gifts I have picked-up as a global city dweller. Some people look at clouds and see sheep and snails I find an Ace of Spades and a tie clip and expect to meet a powerful employed stranger.

Will Benedict gave a presentation last night as part of Artist Lecture Series organized by Azara and Rainer Spangl.

Benedict is half the power behind the very cool Pro Choice Gallery along with partner Lucie Stahl. Presently they are also working to open up a bar (L'Ocean Licker - if I got that straight) next to a very small gay bar called the Blue Banana (which shouldn't sound crass at all).
